Schlopland Tales

Post by Shnoodles »

Ooooo, this looks interesting. It's the new movie from Richard Kelly, the writer/director of Donnie Darko (one of me and Lee's all time favorite time-travel movies) and it is about what happens when the Earth goes spinning out of control (I think). The first three parts of the story is going to be told in three graphic novels to be released in 2006 (that's this year now!) and then the movie tells the final three parts. There is also a website which is going to be the largest and most elaborate even designed for a movie. It stars many weird actors - and Amy Poehler is in it!

What do you guys think? Looks pretty cool, huh. I wonder if Lee has plans to go see it? (Maybe she can take me along too).

Disappointing!

Post by Shnoodles »

Wow - this thread never really took off did it? Kind of disappointing - just like the movie apparently is! It is getting a bad reception at Cannes and people are walking out of the movie:

Oh well - you can't win them all, right guys? Except of course if you are Schlop!

Shnood's News - Ebert says 'Boo' to Darko Two!

Post by Shnoodles »

Looks like this film has pulled a real belly schlop at Cannes. Even Ebert (Lee's nemesis) is piling on:
The greatest disappointment so far this year is an easy choice: “Southland Tales,” the much-anticipated new film by Richard Kelly, whose “Donnie Darko” inspired much enthusiasm. This one is a “fiasco,” writes Variety’s Todd McCarthy, and he is not being unkind, only truthful.

Running an unendurable 161 minutes, it’s an apocalyptic mess set in Los Angeles of the fear future, where “neomarxists” and other neos, all of whom seem like retro retreads from the 1960s, stage an incomprehensible revolution. There’s an all-star cast, headed by The Rock, Sarah Michelle Geller, Mandy Moore, Wallace Shawn, Justin Timberlake, and Janeane Garofolo, who plays a uniformed general who stands inside a bookstore on Venice Beach and has inexplicable telephone conversations for obscure purposes with unestablished characters she never seems to meet.
Will you still see it Lee?

Southland Failure!

Post by Shnoodles »

Shnoods here. Looks like Schlopland Tails is sooo bad that we might not ever get to see it. From this interview it sounds like the director is kind of having a bad week. Looks like this movie is a real (dare I say?) turd.

The director says that the movie is a chaotic puzzle. I wonder if that means the whole movie is like the last of the Da Vinci Shnoode challenges where you had to complete the changing jigsaw pieces. That would suck!

But he left me and Lee and other Darko-fanatics with a message of hope:
What do you say to Donnie Darko fans, to make them keep the faith?
Uh, that I tried. [Laughs] I tried. And hopefully they’ll get a chance to see it at some point.

Is it out yet?

Post by Shnoodles »

Hey you guys,

I'm not sure when the movie comes out for sure, but here is a review of it. I can't really tell if they liked it or not...
Given the list of 10 producers and executive producers on the movie, someone, somewhere along the line, should have had the sense and courage to tell Kelly that he was spending their money on a story for the people in the real world, not the people in his head.

Hey Shnoodles!!!

Yeah, Schlopland Tales comes out on Wednesday- just 48 hours away! Yeah, those are some bad reviews! But I still want to give it a chance. Maybe I can see it with you next week!

I just went to the website and it is as weird and messed up as any elaborate movie website ever was. I wonder if he's trying to do a cool Donnie Darko-esque web experience again.

Anysneech, thanks for keeping tabs on this one... the wait is about to be over!
